Everything we do has an Effect on our Bodies
With all this talk about health and the immune system in the press, lots of people are worried. And they have reason to be. Getting sick these days is a serious thing and is more dangerous than it has been in the past.
Why Yerba Mate is the Key to Your Healing Plan
Many doctors and researchers believe in the healing properties of yerba mate. In fact, there have been many research studies that support the claim that yerba mate is fantastic for your body.
Many believe it is the perfect energy booster for working out. Here is a great article by Runners World.
FYI - My grandmother never needed a study to prove this!!
Here is how Yerba Mate can help you stay healthy.
-Yerba is loaded with nutrients. It has 24 vitamins and minerals,15 amino acids and is loaded with antioxidants.
Compare that to any other tea, energy drink or soda!
-Yerba is a prebiotic, meaning that it gives the body what it needs to be able to use probiotics.
This allows for any probiotic or fermented food you are currently taking, be even more effective.
-Yerba Mate is a known appetite suppressant. It is said that the indigenous people of the region chewed and made infusions with Yerba when there is famine in the region. Doctors in South America always tell their patients who want to lose weight to drink yerba.
It has 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, and a big supply of antioxidants. It is an incredibly nourishing herb containing fatty acids, carotene, chlorophyll, polyphenols and pantothenic acid.
This superfood helps with creating a well-nourished body. And, if you are well nourished, it is more likely you will be able to regulate your appetite and keep hunger at bay. Most people feel a huge relief from hunger and cravings when drinking mate.
Sometimes it is helpful to have an outside source help to bring down the appetite, especially in the beginning of a wellness program. This is supplemental help that will not give you the jitters or do any damage to the heart like weight loss medications might do.
To work effectively, drink yerba mate within half hour of waking and then again around 3pm.
-Yerba Mate has been known to help with Weight Reduction
There have been studies actually proving that yerba mate reduces the size of fat cells around the middle of the body. This is critical as fat cells can not be eliminated once formed. So this ability to reduce them is key!
-Yerba helps the body get rid of toxins. It contains xanthines which are MILD diuretics.
Yerba will help the body in the detoxification process. This is especially helpful for those that do not "sweat" easily or often as well as those that are constipated.
Yerba Mate helps with detox. Like most xanthines, it is a mild diuretic. It also promotes a healthy colon by softening any “backup” that is in there, but also stimulating normal peristalsis.
Many who suffer from mild or acute constipation can find relief with Yerba Mate.
-If you have a bloated belly, or constipated, try yerba. The infusion will help to stimulate something called peristalsis which helps the intestines move.
Many girlfriends have told me that they can fit into pants they weren't able to fit into before drinking yerba.
-Even though yerba has caffeine it still promotes good sleep. Unlike other caffeinated drinks that interrupt sleep, yerba does the opposite.
This is especially important if caffeine usually effects your sleep. That means that you can have more of the appetite suppressing effects later in the day.
-Gives a boost of energy without the jitters. More energy most often leads to more effort in physical and social activities.
Sometimes coffee can give the jitters to someone drinking it. So it can surpass the energy that you would drink it for. Yerba gives the feeling of active relaxation. So, focus is also increased by drinking it.
-Filled with powerful immune supporting plant compounds.
-Mood Boosting, helps with depression
Yerba might help you go down in medications. It has also been known to help people reduce alcohol and quit cigarettes.
Some of my clients eat over depression and a low mood, while others eat because they have anxiety, or too much scattered energy.
Because yerba is an adaptogenic herb and a tonic, it can help a weak system (depression) get stronger or neutralize an overstimulated one.
There was a 2010 study that was Published in the American Journal of Public Health, that showed participating individuals that reported feeling “sad and lonely” tended to rely more on high calorie comfort food than participants not reporting this negative mood.
This led the researchers to conclude that the better the mood, the easier it is for the participant to be motivated to lose weight and stay on a plan. Many report that helped relieve their depression and lessen the need to rely on food.
-Increases awareness and brain function, helps with disorders of attention and focus.
This is due to the components in the yerba which facilitate more brain focus while also allowing the body to calm down. So, as opposed to medications that are almost always all stimulants, this is an adaptogen. Calm focus is what we are after.
-Improves Insulin Sensitivity and Blood Glucose Levels
Many find that their blood sugar levels are reduced. Some report needing less or no sugar throughout the day.
Work to Strengthen Your Body
The best defense is a good offense.
Many believe that a strong system starts with a healthy gut, Yerba Mate is loaded with pre-biotics and fiber.
Thinking of strengthening your body before getting sick is the best plan. In other words, we want your immune system strong and kicking in. Yerba Mate can help with that.
A really strong immunity is actually built over time, but there are things you can do now. Do something every day to ensure you are protected. Drink plenty of fluids, eat a ton of fruits and vegetables, workout at least 5 times a day. Drinking yerba will help build the immunity because it is filled with antioxidants, like EGCG that will support immune cells and gut health.
Stress Weakens Everything
Stress on your body or mind will weaken you. Whether it is thinking about a dreaded event in the future or dealing with environmental toxins, stress is something that will age you, take your focus away and is probably the biggest thing that can weaken your immune system.
Some of those stressors are easier to get rid of than others.
How to Make Yerba Mate
Authentic Method of Drinking Yerba in a Mate Gourd (Cup)
- Start slowly by putting 1-2 heaping tbsp of yerba in your mate gourd (cup)
- Heat water to a temperature that is comfortable for you. Most use the same temperature that they use for drinking tea. You do not want to burn your tongue and it is best not to "boil" the water
- Place bombilla (strainer straw) into gourd, in between the yerba leaves
- Sweeten by placing a few drops of stevia, honey or raw sugar into the mate
- Pour water over yerba leaves
- Sip water up through bombilla (strainer straw)
- Repeat steps 5&6 until the "taste" of the leaves gets weakened (you will have approximately 3-6 "pours" out of the yerba leaves)
- You may then rinse out the mate, replace with fresh leaves and start again
Boil Method to Drinking Yerba (Also for Pitcher Size)
- Use 1 tbsp of blend in 2 cups of water
- Simmer for about 2 minutes (can simmer longer, to get more robust flavor)
- Strain out leaves (can use tea ball, strainer, or coffee press)
- Sweeten to taste
- Drink hot or refrigerate to drink cold
Steeping Filter Method to Drinking Yerba
- Put 1 tbsp of blend in steeping container (pot, mug, coffee press or other filters)
- Boil 2 cups of water
- Pour water over loose-leaf tea and let sit about 4 minutes (The longer it steeps, the more robust the flavor - careful not to steep too long as the tea can get bitter)
- Strain out leaves
- Sweeten to taste
- All teas can be used hot or cold after steeping
So, if you are wanting to drink a tea to improve the overall health of your body, nothing will beat yerba mate.
